Settlement with General Motors regarding illegal sale of consumer data under CCPA
California Attorney General Rob Bonta and local district attorneys secured a $12.75 million settlement with General Motors for illegally selling consumer location and driving data to data brokers in violation of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California’s Unfair Competition Law. The settlement includes civil penalties and injunctive terms that restrict GM’s use of consumer driving data and prohibit future sales to data brokers. This case marks the largest CCPA penalty in California history and the first enforcement action focused on data minimization under the law.
