Two Chicago restaurant owners lose tens of thousands of dollars to Uber Eats account hacks in early 2024, with partial reimbursement only for one.

Two Chicago restaurant owners, Jackie Jackson of Fatburger in Chatham and Patricia González of Healthy Substance in Garfield Ridge, lost tens of thousands of dollars after their Uber Eats accounts were hacked in early 2024. Jackson discovered the hack in February when she noticed unauthorized bank account information on her Uber Eats portal and was informed that three payments totaling over $20,000 had been sent to a different account. González reported losing nearly $20,000 in missing deposits from her Uber Eats account, which she shared publicly on Instagram. Uber Eats stated the hacks were the result of an imposter scam outside their platform and that the merchants are responsible for securing their account information. González received a partial reimbursement of $11,000 after media involvement but is still owed about $10,000, while Jackson has not received any reimbursement. Both women expressed dissatisfaction with Uber Eats’ response and the impact on their businesses.

Vancouver woman loses $600 to Uber account hacking scam after verification code phishing

A British Columbia resident fell victim to an elaborate Uber scam in January. The Vancouver woman, Sarah Hamilton, received a text confirming an Uber pickup arranged by her car dealership, followed by a phone call from someone claiming to be the driver who asked for a verification code. She later discovered the code had been sent to her via email with a warning not to share it. After providing the code, her Uber account was hacked, and she was charged for two unauthorized trips in Calgary totaling over $600. Hamilton contacted her credit card company and Uber, but restoring her account took days and she received no follow-up from Uber regarding prevention measures. Uber later refunded the unauthorized charges but did not comment further on the incident.
