227-year-old woman develops eating disorder after exposure to pro-anorexia content on Tumblr and Twitter
A 27-year-old woman named Annie-Mai Hodge developed an eating disorder that she attributes to exposure to pro-anorexia content on social media platforms like Tumblr and Twitter during her early teens. The content encouraged extreme weight loss and made her feel that losing weight was the "right thing to do," worsening her anorexia. Doctors warned her that her eating disorder could kill her before she received treatment. Her disorder disrupted her education and career plans, forcing her to drop out of college and delaying her university aspirations. Despite these challenges, she recovered enough to start her own marketing business and is now pregnant. She credits therapy and support from local charity Eating Matters with helping her recovery.
