A U.S.-based cryptocurrency holder lost $3.05 million in XRP after their Ellipal wallet was compromised, with stolen funds traced to money laundering networks linked to Huione, a sanctioned Southeast Asian criminal marketplace. On October 12, 2025, an attacker executed over 120 Ripple-to-Tron conversion orders through Bridgers exchange, and by October 15, the entire amount had been laundered through over-the-counter desks connected to Huione’s illicit ecosystem. The victim, identified through a viral YouTube video as address r3cf5***Jjkzc, appeared inexperienced and could not clarify how the wallet was compromised, though they confirmed user error was involved. The victim mistakenly believed they were using a cold wallet when they were actually operating a hot wallet, increasing their exposure to theft. Recovery prospects are extremely low due to delayed reporting and limited law enforcement resources, with jurisdictions like the U.S., Netherlands, Singapore, and France offering better but inconsistent support. ZachXBT, the blockchain investigator, noted that confusion between custodial and non-custodial products is a widespread issue in the industry, enabling large-scale thefts.
