Las Vegas mother 'Susette' kept on phone for 6 hours by fake cartel, pays $15,000 after AI clones her daughter's voice
Summary
On April 7, 2025, a Las Vegas mother named Susette received a call in which she heard what she believed was her 15-year-old daughter's voice, crying and screaming. A man identifying as 'Angel' and claiming to represent a cartel then told Susette that her daughter had witnessed a drug deal, panicked, and been grabbed to prevent her from alerting police. He demanded $15,000 or he would kill her. Susette was kept on the phone for nearly six hours while being directed to banks and grocery stores to withdraw and hand over cash. She later determined the voice was an AI-generated clone of her daughter's, created using audio harvested from her daughter's online presence. The incident was reported by Las Vegas news station KSNV.
