Pig-Butchering Scam: India’s Latest War-Front Against Cybercrime

Jan 1, 2024Myanmar1 source

Summary

A 24-year-old Indian man from Andhra Pradesh was lured to Myanmar through a job offer for an IT executive position, only to be trafficked into a cybercrime center operated by a Chinese criminal gang. At the center, he was forced to participate in a pig-butchering scam, where he was required to contact victims via messaging apps and entice them into fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes. The scam involved creating fake investment platforms and convincing victims to deposit money into these fraudulent accounts. After several weeks of coercion and psychological pressure, the man managed to escape and was later rescued by Thai authorities. He was repatriated to India in November after being held in inhumane conditions and subjected to physical and mental abuse.
