Summary

On June 29, 2024, Anish Daita, 31, was driving a Tesla in Kosciusko County, Indiana at excessive speed when his vehicle went airborne over a road hump, crossed the centre line, and struck an SUV driven by Joseph Criswell, 44, head-on. Criswell died at the scene. Six juvenile passengers in the SUV sustained injuries including head trauma, a broken leg, and internal injuries. Three other individuals were also injured. At the scene Daita told officers his Tesla was on Autopilot when he lost control. He failed three sobriety tests and registered a BAC of 0.155. Daita, an engineer working in the US on a visa, was charged with causing death while operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (Level 4 felony) and two counts of causing serious bodily injury while intoxicated. He was released on a $105,000 bond on July 10, 2024 and required to surrender his passport and wear a GPS monitor.
