Woman unknowingly tracked via disabled AirTag for seven hours across two cities

Jun 1, 2025Louisburg, United States1 source

Summary

A 25-year-old woman from Louisburg, North Carolina, became a victim of AirTag tracking after receiving an alert on her iPhone indicating an unknown AirTag had been with her for over seven hours, traveling from Louisburg to Raleigh and back. The AirTag, which is typically designed to help locate lost items, was reportedly disabled so it could not be heard or located, making it difficult for the victim to remove it. Brianna Bunn, the victim, attempted to locate the device herself and even hired a mechanic, but was unable to find the AirTag. Cybersecurity expert Truman Kain explained that criminals can disable the AirTag’s speaker to prevent it from alerting users, and without locating the physical device, it cannot be disabled or traced. Apple did not respond to inquiries about how to handle such situations or whether the alert could be a false positive. The incident has disrupted Bunn’s daily routine and heightened her concerns about personal safety.
