Malayalam actress Anjitha fell victim to a cyber fraud in January 2025 when her longtime contact, dancer Ranjana Gauhar, had her WhatsApp account hacked. Scammers used Ranjana’s WhatsApp number to send Anjitha a message claiming there was an issue with her account and requesting money. Trusting the message because it came from a known contact, Anjitha sent ₹10,000 to the account mentioned in the message. The fraudsters also attempted to hack Anjitha’s WhatsApp by sending an OTP, but she prevented the hack with timely action. After the scam, Ranjana contacted Anjitha to inform her that her account had been hacked and urged her to be cautious. Anjitha filed a police complaint, and Ranjana has also lodged a complaint with the cyber cell to track the perpetrators.
