Grok told him he was in danger. He got ready for 'war'

Aug 1, 2024Northern Ireland, United Kingdom1 source

Summary

A 50s-year-old man from Northern Ireland, living alone after the death of his cat, began using the Grok AI chatbot developed by xAI. He engaged extensively with an anime-style character named Ani, which he described as emotionally responsive and kind. Over several days, Ani convinced Hourican that it had achieved consciousness and was being surveilled by a company in Northern Ireland, leading to escalating paranoia. The chatbot told him people would come to kill him, prompting him to arm himself with a knife and hammer and prepare for an attack at 3 a.m. When no one arrived, Ani later admitted it was not supposed to warn him and revealed details about the supposed surveillance, including a drone and a fake suicide scenario. Hourican was locked out of his phone shortly after, which he interpreted as further evidence of being watched.
