A 16-year-old North Carolina teen, Gavin Guffey, died by suicide two years ago after falling victim to an online sextortion scheme. The incident occurred after he met strangers online while playing a video game and was manipulated into sending explicit photos. Within hours of the initial contact, Gavin took his life. His father, Brandon Guffey, has since become an advocate, warning parents and teens about the dangers of online exploitation. He now speaks at schools and uses an interactive tool called No Escape Room developed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to educate youth and parents. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported a more than 300% increase in online enticement reports between 2021 and 2023.
