Jan 1, 2023Australia1 source

Summary

An 11-year-old Australian girl was sexually abused by a stranger she added on Snapchat in 2023 as part of a competition to increase her Snap score. The man, Jai Clapp, falsely claimed to be 17 and groomed the girl over 12 days before meeting her in person three times at a local park. Clapp was later sentenced to eight years and 10 months in prison for the abuse. The case was revealed in a county court of Victoria sentencing in late April. Snapchat's Quick Add feature, which suggests users based on shared interests, was used by Clapp to connect with the girl. The Australian government plans to ban users under 16 from accessing Snapchat in December 2024, but the minimum age for accounts is currently 13.
