255-year-old vice principal loses $2,750 to iPhone scam on Facebook Marketplace in Port of Spain
A 55-year-old vice principal from St James was scammed out of $2,750 after attempting to purchase an iPhone 15 Pro Max through Facebook Marketplace. The victim transferred the money to a Republic Bank account on October 7 at the PriceSmart carpark in MovieTowne, Port of Spain. The seller, who used the name “Andrew Fredrick,” ceased communication after the payment was made. The phone was never delivered. Police Constable Pariag of the St James Police Station is investigating the incident.
26-year-old woman loses $30,500 after clicking fake Republic Bank link on SMS
A 26-year-old woman from Diego Martin lost over $30,000 from her Republic Bank account after clicking on a fake bank link. On Tuesday, she received an SMS from a number claiming to be Republic Bank, directing her to a website called "republiconlinettts.org." She clicked the link, and the next day she discovered $30,500 had been transferred from her account without her authorization. The incident occurred around 2:48 p.m. on Tuesday and was discovered the following day at around 2 p.m. Police Constable Phipps is investigating the case.
