Speedway employees receive $12.1 million in BIPA settlement over unauthorised biometric data collection
A federal court in the Northern District of Illinois approved a $12.1 million settlement resolving a class‑action lawsuit against Speedway, a convenience‑store and gas‑station chain, for allegedly violating the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). The case stemmed from Speedway’s practice of requiring employees to scan their fingerprints for time‑keeping without obtaining the written informed consent required by BIPA. The settlement will distribute the funds equally among roughly 7,700 current and former employees after attorneys’ fees are deducted.
