AI-Driven Fake Worker Scams Target Remote Hires and Fund North Korean Government

Between 2020 and 2024, organized groups used generative AI to create realistic digital avatars, deep‑fake video filters, and forged résumés to pose as remote workers on platforms such as LinkedIn. The scams infiltrated more than 300 U.S. companies and extracted at least $6.8 million, which U.S. Department of Justice officials say was funneled to the North Korean government. Experts from Google Threat Intelligence and Ping Identity warned that hiring systems are especially vulnerable as AI makes the impersonations increasingly convincing. The operation highlights a new frontier of AI‑enabled financial fraud targeting corporate recruitment processes.

Chinese Spamouflage campaign targets Canadian officials and Chinese‑Canadian community

Rapid Response Mechanism Canada identified a new transnational repression operation, dubbed “Spamouflage,” that began on August 31 2024. The campaign uses hundreds of bot‑like accounts on X, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube to post deep‑fake videos, sexually explicit AI‑generated images, and doxxing material aimed at ten Mandarin‑speaking Chinese‑Canadian individuals as well as Canadian government officials, media outlets and the Canadian Armed Forces. The deepfakes falsely accuse Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister Mélanie Joly and other officials of corruption and sexual scandals. Researchers attribute the coordinated inauthentic activity with high confidence to actors linked to the People’s Republic of China.

South African Woman Kidnapped and Forced to Work in Myanmar Pig Butchering Scam Compound

A woman identified only as 'Sara' was kidnapped in South Africa and trafficked to Myanmar, where she was forced to operate a pig butchering cryptocurrency scam targeting victims in the United States. Her account revealed the dual victimhood at the heart of these operations: U.S. victims including Bay Area scientist Warren Dang lost life savings, while the scam operators themselves were often trafficking victims held against their will. The FBI reported investment scam losses rose to $4.5 billion in 2023.
