Google to Pay $8.75 Million to Settle Illinois Biometric Privacy Lawsuit Over Student Data

Google was sued for allegedly collecting facial and voice biometric information from K‑12 students in Illinois through its Google Workspace for Education and G Suite for Education services without the required consent under the state's Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). The class‑action case, H.K. et al. v. Google LLC, covered students enrolled between March 2015 and May 2025. Google agreed to an $8.75 million settlement that will provide pro‑rated payments of roughly $30‑$100 to eligible claimants, with a claim deadline of October 16 2025 and a final approval hearing scheduled for October 14 2025, while denying any wrongdoing.
