AI-Driven Fake Worker Scams Target Remote Hires and Fund North Korean Government

Between 2020 and 2024, organized groups used generative AI to create realistic digital avatars, deep‑fake video filters, and forged résumés to pose as remote workers on platforms such as LinkedIn. The scams infiltrated more than 300 U.S. companies and extracted at least $6.8 million, which U.S. Department of Justice officials say was funneled to the North Korean government. Experts from Google Threat Intelligence and Ping Identity warned that hiring systems are especially vulnerable as AI makes the impersonations increasingly convincing. The operation highlights a new frontier of AI‑enabled financial fraud targeting corporate recruitment processes.
